About

Todd Lanam is a painter who grew up on the San Francisco Peninsula, where he continues to live and work. While on the rosters of Henoch Gallery in New York and Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art in San Francisco, he showed in several exhibitions, including Pulse Miami, Volta New York, and Art Context Miami. He’s had several solo and group exhibitions in galleries across the country, and his work is part of several collections, including the Society for Contemporary Art in London and the City of San Francisco. He earned a BFA from California College of the Arts in 2006 and an MFA from San Francisco State University in 2011. 

His recent work combines motifs from the worlds of theatre and fairy tales with imagery from his native Californian landscape, aiming to portray how these places exist as dreamlike memories in the depths of his psyche. The eerie settings and subtle surrealism of his landscapes are simultaneously windows into his mind and meditations on the nature of reality itself, questioning the slippery, inherent objectivity of “realistic” painting. Lanam’s paintings are akin to sculpture, building up in layers from a foundation below. You can peer deep into the multiple layers of his work to discover what’s been covered up, left behind, hidden, or brought to the surface. By creating this experience for the viewer, he captures the struggle inherent to the multifaceted, complex process of mining the vast, mysterious self.
